Metairie is an unincorporated community, and if it were a city it would be one of the largest in Louisiana. Its central business district sits on Causeway Boulevard near Lake Pontchartrain, and Veterans Boulevard was laid out alongside a drainage canal and became a regional commercial center.
Heavy rain is a regular test here. The May 1995 flood dropped more than 20 inches of rain on Metairie in about twelve hours. Lots that hold water after an ordinary storm deteriorate quickly.
